We’re making terracotta seed balls with artist @tuanmami in residence at @bankstowncommunitygarden this weekend. Come down if you have a spare hour. The seed balls you make will form part of the work being exhibited at the @biennalesydney, which opens on 13 March at White Bay Power Station in Rozelle.

Meet Dom and Nancy, two of the OG Bankstown community gardeners. Nancy became involved way back in 2013 when a group of local residents first dreamed up the idea of a community garden in Bankstown @ourcbcity. Dom became involved not long after, as in his retirement he’s played an instrumental role in several community gardens around town. He’s also been trained in permaculture and these principles are utilised in our garden.

Many community gardens fall over after a while because it’s hard work to keep them going. It’s also important for a pool of people from different stages of life to work together to ensure sustainability of volunteers - Dom is about to turn 73 and Nancy is 86 years young (“it’s only a number,” she says). Since late last year they’ve been working closely with Sheila, a mum at @bankstown.public.school, who volunteered to take on the coordination of the garden.

Between their gardening expertise and her enthusiasm for community organising, the garden is now bringing lots of new people together. It’s exciting to be able to renew the garden and ensure the work of previous volunteers is built on. It was a wild and wet night but luckily we held our working bee last weekend when it was hot and dry. Here’s a cute video of the kids harvesting the carrots 🥕 - “we did it!’ Team work makes the dream work 🥰 Thanks for the video @sueleelim and showing the kids how it’s done.

It’s calmer out there now and tomorrow’s @ourcbcity Insect Hotel workshop with @localfoodprint is still on so see you in the garden in the morning!
